1921 Plans for St. Sophia Cathedral

The illustration below is from the San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 11, 1921. The plan was to build a cathedral, school, and orphanage as the illustration shows. However, after monies were collected, the board of trustees opted to build a smaller village church.

For those of you unfamilar with this location, the cathedral was at the top of the Hayes Street hill. The Ida B. Wells School was across the street from the entrance facing Pierce. Alamo Park is on the other side of Hayes Street.

This location is also famous to those of you that run the SF Bay to Breakers race. The hill is famous for breaking the best runners. In addition, the famous row of San Francisco victorian houses photographed in so many magazines and movies borders Alamo Park. Tourists can be found during summer taking photographs.
