In the early 1900′s, subscriptions were taken towards the building of new churches or cathedrals. A subscription was a promise to pay and was accounted for as a note payable.
When St. Sophia was formed in 1921, subscriptions were received from the San Francisco Greek community. Below are two examples of actual subscriptions. Note that the signatures were either Fr. Caravellas or Fr. Philaretos Johannides, our first priest and President of the Board of Trustees.
