Memoirs of Peter Boudoures

Chapter 39

Charles Skouras

When I met with Charles, the first thing that he told me was that I should not listen to his brother. He also thought that his brother Spiro, thought he was another Atlas, holding up the world. He said that his brother Spiro thought he could solve everybody's troubles, and if I listened to him I would either land in the poor house or in the hospital.

This impressed me. I said to him, "Well Mr. SKouras, you may be right as far as that is concerned, but instead of you becoming chairman for the Los Angeles area, I think you should be the Regional Director for the Eleven Western States. You're better known, and you're better qualified. I'd gladly give up the job to become your assistant or do anything else that would help the cause."

Charles Skouras laughed. He congratulated me for taking it like a good trooper. He said, "No, they knew what they were doing when they appointed you chairman. I accept the job here on one condition, that you recommend to me a Greek-American to handle the details of the campaign. He must be young, presentable, and must be fluent in both Greek and English. He must be willing to devote himself full time for the next three months to the Greek War Relief, because I don,t have that much time. I will furnish him with an office and a secretary." I agreed, and I asked him to give me a couple of days to think the matter over so that I could recommend the proper person to fulfill the responsibility.

After considerable thought I recommended Victor Adams for the job and took him to meet Charles Skouras. Mr. Skouras asked me what Mr. Adams was doing at the time and I told him that he was currently unemployed. He was recently employed selling the Encyclopedia Britannica, door to door. Charles then wanted to know what he did before that. Victor Adams answered that he was an actor in the live theater. He had a part in the musical 'Show Boat' the last time it played at the Curran Theater in San Francisco.

Charles turned to me and said, "Peter, this is a fine man, well and good, but I've had enough to do with actors. I don't want an actor to head this drive, no matter how good the man is." I became annoyed. I answered Mr. Skouras by telling him that unless he had confidence in me he should never have asked me to recommend a person for the job. I told him that until he gave him a chance to work for a week or two, he had no reason to turn him down. He changed his mind and agreed to hire Victor.

Eventually when the drive was over, Victor became manager for one of their theaters. He subsequently became assistant buyer for the candy division of all the Fox Theaters in the Eleven Western States.

In the meantime, there was a meeting of the Greek War Relief committee held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. There were about 75 people present. Among them was Adamandios Polizoides, formerly a newspaper man from New York, and at that time, professor of journalism at the University of Southern California. Also present were Mr. Van Klinesmith, President of the University of Southern California and a number of other people.
