Children Slaughtered by Machine Gun Fire; Greeks Demand King's Return
ATHENS, Nov. 17. - (The United Press) - Rioting broke out today in front of the Foreign Office as a result of the national elections.
Many persons, including a number of children, were reported killed when the space before the office was swept by machine gun fire. Adherents
of King Constatine were blamed for the firing.
QUEEN MOTHER AS REGENT
ATHENS, Nov. 17 - Queen Mother of Greece will probably assume the regency today, it was learned here this forenoon.
(The Queen Mother is the widow of the late King George, who was assassinated at Saloniki in 1915. Admiral Coundouriotis is the present regent.)
The resignation of Premier Venizelos has been made public.
The majority leaders speak of the restoration of former King Constantine as an accomplished fact.
"Constantine is our rightful king," former premier Gounaris, leader of the successful party in the Greek elections, told the correspondent yesterday,
"and we expect him back as soon as a plebiscite is held showing that the people want him".
"We expect to assume the government in a day or two," continued M. Gunaris, "when the results of the elections become official." Then we shall quickly
call the chamber and have a plebiscite.
"It was the intention of Constantine to return after the plebiscite, and I have no message so far from him that he is coming earlier".
"If the plebiscite shows the people want Constantine, I do not see any France or Great Britain should interfere. We won the elections because the
people regarded the Venizelists as usurpers by force".
"We wish to avoid civil war and further troubles. We shall pursue a policy of conciliation, not vengeance, toward the Venizelists. We do want anticipate
a revolt on the army, which is really Constantinist."
It is believed here that the allies will make known to Greece their intention not to recognize Constantine should the ex-king be restored to the throne.
NEW CABINETS FORMED.
ATHENS, Nov. 17 - (The Associated Press) - George Rhallis, former premier, has succeeded in forming a cabinet to replace the Venizelos government, defeated
in Sunday's elections, and the new ministry will be sworn in Wednesday, it was announced today.
M. Rhallis is 80 years old.
