Greek Fisherman on Trial For Murder
George Pensacola, Fred Potter's Slayer, Contends That He Killed the Young Man in Self Defense.
VALLEJO, Nov. 24 - The trial of George Pensacola, the Greek fisherman who is charged with the murder of young Fred Potter on the bay near
Benecia in August last and who escaped to Oregon, when he was brought back by Sheriff Keyes after a long chase, commenced in the Superior
Court, Fairfield, before Judge Buckles yesterday, District Attorney Gregory appearing for the prosecution and Attorneys Archie Campbell and
C.S. Perry of San Francisco for the defense.
The witnesses examined were Dr. Brown of Martinez, who conducted the post mortem examination, and Nielsen and Otto Bohm, who found the young
man's body. Self-defense will be the plea of the defense, as they will contend young Potter struck at Pensacola with an oar before the latter
stabbed him. The attorneys for the defense wanted to take the jury in a launch to the scene of the murder, but Judge Buckles did not think it
was necessary. The trial is likely to last three or four days.
