"Greek Governor" of Rhodes Makes Mess

Hold-Up of Russian Steamer Causes Diplomatic Bull.

ST. PETERSBURG, Feb. 18. - A diplomatic protest to the Greek government has resulted in an amusing "hold-up" of the Russian mail steamer "Chikhacheff" on its last trip from Odessa to Alexandria by the Greek "Governor of Rhodes." The steamer was halted at sea off the island of Tenedos by rifle shots from a sloop load of armed Greeks, and the captain, on halting, was informed that the "Governor of Rhodes" was aboard and desired the latest newspapers. The angry sailorman refused the demand in emphatic languages, resumed his voyage and on his arrival at Smyrna reported the facts to the Russian representative at Athens.

The island of Rhodes was occupied by Italians during the Italo-Turkish war and is still being held by them, so the appearance of a "Greek governor" is somewhat premature.
