Greeks Must Stop Raids on Brigands
LONDON, March 4. - With the winter about over attention is again centered on Macedonia where conditions are decidly serious and during the
last three days numerous clashes have been reported between Greek bands officered by former members of the Greek army and Ottoman troops.
In fact, so serious is the outlook that Austro-Hungary and Russia have addressed a peremptory note to the government at Athens, in which they
state unless repressive measures are undertaken and the protection given to the brigands operating in Macedonia is withdrawn, stern measures
will be adopted to compel Greece to yield this point. The task of pacifying Macedonia, says the note, is exclusively Austria's, hence the
Hellenic government had better keep its hands off. The Greek bands in Macedonia show that they are making common cause on both soldiery and
pesantry. In several cases villages were surrounded and the inhabitants compelled to pay tribute to the "cause of freedom." This has resulted
in increasing the fear of the inhabitants that when spring shall come they will find themselves at the mercy of both the bandits and the Turkish
troops.
