THE YOUNG ELEMENT ELECTED
New Officers of the Hellenic Mutual Benevolent Society Installed.
The Hellenic Mutual Benevolent Society held its annual meeting last Wednesday night and elected the following officers: Mitchell D.
Vanvales, president; George Checures, vice-president; Alexander J. Kosta, treasurer; A. Papageorge, secretary; E. Cokinos, A. Simacopulos,
M. Bacopulos, P. Checures, John Cresoverry, A. Riganopulos and A. Batsakes, directors.
The Hellenic Mutual Benevolent Society was incorporated in 1892. At that time there were not more than thirty-five members, and at the
present time there are 135 and the membership is gradually increasing. C. Demetrak, the retiring president, was given an ovation as he
retired from the chair, and Mitchell Vanvales was greeted with three rousing cheers when he took his seat. "Mitch," as his friends call
him, is the most popular man in the Greek colony, and this if the third time he has been elected president. As a business man he is known
all over the State, and his name stands high over all of Australasia. Under his rule the society is sure to steadily advance; but he will
still fight for his all standard, "Americans first of all, then Greeks."
"We are all passionately fond of our mother country," said Mr. Vanvales yesterday, "but first, last and all the time we are American
citizens."
