Greece Facing Financial Disaster
PARIS, Nov. 7 - The refusal of the United States to extend financial aid to Greece, together with the unwillingness of England to increase
the Greek indebtedness, has developed a sudden demand for "peace at any price," according to Greek sources in Paris. It is stated further
from good authority near Premier Gounaris, that with the allied powers in such a disinterested attitude, Greece is willing to accept a
humble peace with Turkey along the following lines:
The Smyrna zone should become autonomous territory under the nominal sovereignty of Turkey with a Christian governor to be appointed by the
allied powers. The Greeks will ask that the allies guarantee to keep the entire territory to the east and north of Smyrna as far as the Sea
of Maramara under this autonomous regime.
Greeks in Paris express fears that financial disaster may overtake the country unless the allies act quickly. They say that the only hope
now is in the success of Gournaris' mission to London. Meanwhile, Greece has never been in a more precarious situation than now.
