Hellenic Drive For Cathedral Nears Goal
That the $50,000 needed to finance the building in San Francisco of a Greek orthodox cathedral, an orphanage and school, will be raised in
the Western States before October 1, is the burden of reports received at the Hewes building headquarters of the campaign today. Though
California is leading in the tabulation of donations since the campaign opened last Monday, other Western States and even Canada and Mexico
are speeding towards their quotas.
In the San Francisco region, which has been alloted a quota of $120,000, more than $60,000 has been realized to date, according to the Rev.
Philaretos Johannides, rector of the new cathedral, who heads the Hellenic campaign committee here. Mayor James Rolph Jr. leads the committee
of prominent Americans aiding in the drive.
CORNERSTONE LAID
The projected edifice, which will be known as the Cathedral of St. Sophia, is to be constructed at Hayes, Fell, and Pierce streets, with the
orphanage and school adjoining. The cornerstone of the cathedral was laid recently by the Most Rev. Meletios Metaxakis, Archbishop of Athens.
The campaign for funds to erect the buildings has received the united support of the people of the Hellenic races throughout the diocese, as well
as that of thousands of interested Americans.
