ANNUNCIATION CATHEDRAL DANCE GROUPS WIN AT FDF

This year’s FDF was, by all accounts, a most successful event. First, it was the largest FDF ever, with more participants (spectators and dance groups) than ever before. Then, it was held at the Anaheim Hilton, adjacent to Disneyland and other attractions. Finally, our three groups (Angelakia, Filadelfakia and Kymata) were rewarded for their efforts, in addition to the self-satisfaction of participating in a mega-event of this kind.

Our little Angelakia was the first group to perform Sunday right after the Divine Liturgy. Although the group did not dance for competition, it was awarded special ribbons commending the children for their participation. Next, Filadelfakia received a Judges Special Achievement Award as well as the Advanced Primary Fourth Place. Kymata received the FDF Board of Trustees Choral Special Achievement Award as well as the Advanced Junior Third Place award. Congratulations!

Our dancers will be in church on Sunday, March 2, to present their trophies and receive our congratulations.

Meanwhile, we have not forgotten issues pertaining to our dance program which need to be addressed. Therefore, the parents, directors, and parent advisors, will invited to meet with Father Stephen on Tuesday, March 4. The meeting will take place at the Cathedral at 6:30 p.m.

GOYA TO HOLD LOCK-IN

On Friday, March 28, GOYA will attend the third Salutations service, beginning at 7 p.m. Following the services, the group will convene in the fellowship hall to begin addressing a number of global and personal issues. Afterwards, they will watch and critique a contemporary film. The group will spend the night at the Cathedral, sleeping in sleeping bags. They will also hold elections for new officers. The next morning, following breakfast, they will continue continue their discussions and assist in preparing for our Annunciation Feast Day. Michael Canellos and Athena Stavrakaras serve as advisors to the group. Currently, Leah Stavrakaras is GOYA president. Maria Kalligeros is Vice-President. Mary Canellos is secretary. Stephanie Vorrises is treasurer. GOYA will also help set up and serve on Godparents/Special Persons Day, Sunday, March 9.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PARTICIPATES IN ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL

All students, grades 4 through High School, have received their information packets to enable them to participate in this year’s oratorical festival. The festival will take place at the Cathedral on Sunday, March 23rd, immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Parents, grandparents, and other family members are being asked to encourage your children’s participation.

The coffee hour that Sunday will follow the oratorical festival. The winners will go on to represent the Cathedral at the District competition, which will take place at the Church of the Nativity in Novato on Sunday, April 13. The winners of the regional festival will then go on to compete in the Metropolitan festival, which will take place at the St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center, May 9 and 10.

We look forward to another successful oratorical festival this year. The program is under the direction of Denise Yeilding, principal, and the teachers of the Cathedral Sunday School.

IONIAN VILLAGE - FAR BUT NOT-SO-FAR

Ionian Village is a summer camp setting along the Ionian Sea, owned and operated by the Archdiocese of America. Its summer programs are usually sold-out well in advance. Therefore, if you are interested in considering Ionian Village for your children, or for yourself, we recommend that you inquire early.
Ionian Village operates three programs:

1. A Summer Travel Camp, for 7th-9th grades, June 30 - July 17
2. Byzantine Adventure, 10th-12th grades, July 23 - August 9
3. Spiritual Odyssey, Ages 19-30, July 13 - July 28.

Each of these programs affords the participant the opportunity of visiting historical sites throughout Greece, in addition to the program at the Village itself. The Cathedral office has some brochures describing these programs in detail. Or, if you prefer, visit the web site at www.ionianvillage.org, or contact Ionian Village at (646) 519-6190 or via email at ionianvillage@goarch.org.
