The Byzantine Chant Ministry at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral is open to all who desire to participate in the prayer of the Church through sacred music. In Orthodox worship, chant and the cycle of services are inseparable; hymnography is not an addition to prayer, but one of the Church’s primary ways of proclaiming theology and forming the soul.
Through Byzantine chant, the texts of the Church are expressed musically, creating auditory icons, sounds that draw the faithful into deeper prayer, repentance, and attentiveness before the presence of God. This ministry seeks to preserve and cultivate the living musical tradition of the Church while forming chanters who understand chant as a ministry of prayer.
Instruction is led by Christopher Hondros. Byzantine notation is used, but no prior knowledge is required to participate. There are multiple roles within the chant ministry, and newcomers are welcomed and supported at every level of experience.
The chant class typically meets on Saturdays at 3:00 PM. Schedules may vary, so participants are encouraged to check the parish calendar or reach out for upcoming sessions.
